Overcoming High-Pressure Interview Challenges: A Reflection on a Difficult Experience

In the competitive realm of digital marketing, interview scenarios can sometimes push candidates into unexpected situations, revealing vulnerabilities we might not encounter during typical daily tasks. Recently, I experienced such a moment during a technical interview that left me feeling overwhelmed and questioning my own capabilities. I’d like to share this experience, not for sympathy, but to shed light on the common human aspects of professional growth and resilience.

Background and Context

With over six years of hands-on experience in paid media, I’ve developed comprehensive skills in designing and executing detailed media plans, managing budgets, testing strategies, and optimizing campaigns across platforms like TikTok and Meta. My previous roles involved creating granular plans, analyzing metrics, and refining strategies based on historical data—a luxury not always available in real-time scenarios.

The Interview Setting

The interview was with a small agency, led by a manager who seemed well-versed and aligned with my background. We initially connected well, setting a positive tone. However, as the session progressed, it became more of a live practical test, involving screen-sharing exercises such as building campaigns, providing strategic recommendations, and drafting client communications.

Key Tasks and Challenges

One of the first exercises involved completing a mock campaign plan for a hypothetical client—deciding on platforms, funnels, budget allocations, and estimating costs based on limited information. While I am accustomed to breaking down campaigns in detail, I found myself at a disadvantage when required to adapt to the constraints of a live setting. I wasn’t able to use historical data or perform extensive calculations, which is often part of my routine.

The Complexity of Live Performance

During the exercise, my approach was overly detailed and, perhaps, overly complicated for the context. The interviewer pointed out that my plans were too complex, and I failed to notice some formulas in my spreadsheets weren’t automated, leading to inaccuracies in basic calculations. As I attempted to build campaigns within Meta’s platform, I became increasingly nervous, questioning every move I made under the interviewer’s scrutiny.

The Impact of Pressure

Things escalated when the interviewer expressed concerns about my performance, suggesting that my math skills might not be strong and questioning my ability to handle the role. It was a stark contrast to my usual confidence in creating strategic recommendations and campaign structures. The sense of being judged in real-time intensified my anxiety, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was failing publicly.

Self-Reflection and Realizations

This experience left me feeling like a fraud—despite my professional background, I couldn’t perform as expected under pressure. I wondered if my previous successes were due to occasional mistakes and learning moments that I now couldn’t afford to have. The role was also shifting from a combined campaign manager/optimizer to a split position, and I questioned whether I was even suited for the account management aspect.

Moving Forward

In the end, I was honest about my fit for the position, expressing that I didn’t think it was the right place for me. Despite the emotional toll, I recognize that such experiences, while uncomfortable, are a natural part of professional development. They highlight areas for growth—whether it’s managing pressure better, refining live math skills, or simply practicing more in simulated environments.

Final Thoughts

To those who might encounter similar situations: you are not alone. Many professionals have faced high-stakes interviews that challenge our confidence and reveal imperfections. These moments, while tough, are opportunities for growth. It’s important to remember that one difficult experience does not define your entire capability or worth.

Thank you to everyone who offered support and understanding. Sharing these stories helps diminish imposter syndrome and reminds us that we all have room to grow—sometimes through the most challenging of moments.
